HVAC Zoning in Pasadena, CA
Defining an HVAC Zoning System
An HVAC zoning system allows localized temperature control in different areas of your home. Rather than relying on one thermostat, you will have two or more with a zoned system. This setup allows for more precise temperature control and better energy efficiency.
How HVAC Zoning Works
It depends on your heating and cooling system. For ducted heat pumps and forced-air systems (furnaces and central air conditioners), you will install dampers, two or more thermostats, and a control panel. The dampers are fitted to your ductwork and can open or close to direct airflow to specific zones. Each zone will have its own thermostat that communicates with the control panel. When a zone calls for heating or cooling, the dampers in that area will open and allow conditioned air to flow through.
Ductless mini-split systems are zoned by design. They feature an outdoor unit and multiple indoor air handlers connected by refrigerant lines. The air handlers can operate independently, letting you set different temperatures wherever they are located.
When Does Zoning Make Sense?
Installing an HVAC zoning system makes sense for homes with multiple levels, large open spaces, big bay or picture windows, or areas with specific heating or cooling needs. Zoning also works well for multi-family homes with separate living spaces like an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) or apartment over a garage.
Other Considerations for Zoning
While zoning offers many advantages, there are a few things to consider before installation:
- Cost: Installing an HVAC zoning system can be expensive, especially if you have a larger home or multiple zones. However, the savings on power costs over time may make up for the initial investment.
- Incentives and rebates: You may be able to reduce the cost of installing a ductless mini-split system or HVAC zoning equipment through various California and federal programs. Visit our Incentives and Rebates page to find out more.
- Proper installation: Hiring an experienced HVAC contractor to properly install and set up your zoned system is crucial. Shoddy installation can undercut the benefits of these technologies. Partner with a licensed and insured contractor with a track record you can trust.
- Maintenance: Zoning technologies require regular maintenance to keep them working efficiently. Common maintenance tasks include changing air filters, inspecting and adjusting dampers and thermostats, and cleaning air handlers. Generally, it is best to turn to a professional with the tools and know-how to perform proper maintenance.
